Taken during my first session with the band in early 1965, this portrait was inspired by a major newspaper describing the Stones as being “animals who should be caged….”

Brian Jones was very vain about his hair and took this opportunity to have it trimmed by the studio hairdresser while the band were making an appearance on the TV show Hullabaloo.

By 1966 there was a lot of media interest in the band and several magazines wanted photographs of the guy’s “at home”. This was not something that any of them looked forward to, so it was decided that I would shoot a series of images of each of them in their homes and then the magazines were put in contact with me.

In 1966 I shot a series of photographs of each member of the band “at home” so that they didn’t have to endure strange photographers invading their space! This portrait of Keith with his lovely Bentley, known as “Blue Lena”, was taken at “Redlands”, his recently acquired home in West Sussex.

The Autumn 1965 US tour that I did with the Stones was an exciting and exhausting experience as well as a very frustrating one. The frustration was because of the appalling lighting in most of the venues – no portable lighting rig in this primitive times! In fact it was frequently too dark to take photographs of my sort but most of the time I “pushed” my film as far as it would go and hoped for the best! This shot was taken at one of the gigs where the lighting was pretty good – but I have no idea where in the USA it was…….

At the end of December 1965 when the tour had finished we were in Los Angeles and the band went into RCA studios in Hollywood to record the AFTERMATH album. I only stayed in LA for a few days but spent them happily with the band and this portrait of Mick is one of the shots taken at that time. Incidentally the microphone was supposed to have been the one that Elvis liked to use!

Out Of Their Heads, 1965, Ormond Yard London

This portrait became the most important shot for me from my first session with the Stones, because it was used as the cover for their album called Out Of Their Heads in the UK and Decembers Children in the USA. I was still only 18 years old and to have my first Stones cover was a turning point in my career. I digitally re-created & colourised this version for my most recent book on the band. The original cover was in black & white and I don’t recall shooting it in colour at the time, so I thought it was a good opportunity to create something new!

Shape Of Things To Come, 1965, RCA studios Hollywood USA

This curious shot was taken in RCA studios at the end of the 65 tour. When I was editing a recent book I looked again at this shot and thought that it foresaw changes that were to happen to the band in the years ahead. It just seemed odd the way Brian appears smaller than everybody else and the others are all looking at him – it’s almost as though he is beginning to disappear……
