This portrait of Jimi in his famous military jacket has become my single most famous image and is probably the most iconic studio portrait ever taken of the great musician.

This portrait was taken in early 1967 during my first session with the band.

In those days everybody wanted to look moody and sexy but Mitch’s attempts to do so had us all in hysterics!

Jimi’s jacket, 1967, Masons Yard Studio, London

This is another shot from my first session with Jimi at my Mason’s Yard studio in 1967. This now famous jacket came from a shop in London’s Portobello Road market called Lord Kitchener’s Valet which specialized in old uniforms.

Jimi Cravat, 1967, Masons Yard London

I love this portrait of Jimi, his hands look fantastic and the lace cuffs and crushed velvet jacket are amazing. He took to the fashion of the day in a way that made you feel they were all designed with him in mind!

Jimi Cloak, 1967, Masons Yard London

When I shot my first session with Jimi in early 1967 he arrived wearing his now famous military jacket and in a small bag he carried this cloak as well as a curious crushed velvet jacket. We worked with¬†all the¬†outfits and although the military jacket has become an icon in it’s own right I always rather preferred the cloak!

Jimi Smoking Triptych, 1967 / 2007, Masons Yard London

Although the original Smoking portrait became a famous image of Jimi in it’s own right it was, in fact, part of a series of three shots. Recently I thought I would add some colour to these classic portraits and this triptych is one of the results.

Shot during my first session with Jimi in early 1967 at my studio in Masons Yard in Central London.

The boots were from a shop called Annello & Davide and everybody wore them!

Jimi Blue Smoke, 1967, Masons Yard Studio, London

This is another shot from my first session with Jimi at my Mason’s Yard studio in 1967 and is part of the famous Smoking series. This particular version was originally produced as a blue toned print for the cover of Rolling Stone magazine back in the 90s and was selected by them as one of the greatest rock portraits in their September 2004 50th Anniversary Of Rock issue!

Colour Experience, 1967, Masons Yard Studio, London

This shot of Jimi, Mitch & Noel was taken during my second session with the band in 1967. The guy’s had decided to perm their hair to look more like Jimi and therefore made the first session out of date in the space of a few weeks! I produced this colour re-creation earlier this year for an exhibition.

Jimi Green Jacket, 1967, Masons Yard Studio, London

When Jimi’s manager Chas Chandler and I discussed my first session with the band we agreed not to shoot any colour but to present them in a classic traditional portrait style. Years later when I first started to use digital imaging as a post production tool I realised that I could re-create some of my earlier images and add colour. I remembered this particular jacket of Jimi’s being a dark forest green……..
