Chris Spedding, 1976, Camber Sands

Chris Spedding was one of the top session guitarists in the UK when he recorded as a solo artist in his own right for Micky Most’s RAK label. This shot of Chris with my 1957 Oldsmobile Super 88 was taken at Camber Sands for the single Jump In My Car. I also made my first (and almost my last!) promo film for this record!

Robert Palmer & Elkie Brooks, 1973, Gt. Windmill Street, London

Elkie Brooks & Robert Palmer were in a great band called Vinegar Joe at this time but it was decided to shoot a session with the pair of them by themselves as they had a tremendous reputation for their live performances and there was great chemistry between them. Robert went on to a major solo career as did Elkie and I worked with her on several other projects.

Sparks – Terminal Jive, 1980, Victoria Station, London

Sparks are a great band and I worked with Ron & Russell Mael throughout the 70s. This mad shot was one of several I shot for the Terminal Jive album sleeve in 1980. I took them to various locations around London and they would just perform, creating strange little scenes – this was in Victoria Station and the guy in the foreground is a tramp who is telling Ron that he is lying in his spot!

Billy Fury, 1982, Odeon Hammersmith London

Billy Fury was a hero from the early 60s and although dismissed by some as an Elvis impersonator he was actually a very exciting performer and had a sexy and dangerous persona. I got a chance to photograph him when he performed at the Odeon Hammersmith in London in 1982. He kept me waiting for ages and I’m not sure I would have bothered for anybody else. He died a few months later…….

Cliff Richard is probably our most enduring rock star with a career that has spanned over 50 years. I first met him on the set of a film my father wrote called Exspresso Bongo in 1957 – I was eleven year sold – he starred as Bongo Herbert! I have subsequently shot several sessions with him and produced 5 or 6 album covers for him as well. This series of shots was for the US version of an album called Every Face Tells A story.

I first started working with Dana Gillespie in the mid 60s and have continued to work with her to the present day producing many covers for her numerous albums. She started as a pop/folk singer and has evolved into one of the most respected British blues singers, having been voted as Britain’s Top Female Blues artist on several occasions. This shot was from the session for her 1973 Weren’t Born A Man album that she made during her period with David Bowie’s management company.

Oasis, 1996, Primrose Hill, London

When Mojo Magazine asked me to shoot Oasis for their cover in 1996 the band were the talk of the town and already had quite a reputation. I thought they were a Stones/Beatles tribute band and they rather left me cold, but I was not prepared for the problems to come! When they arrived at the studio they were so aggressive that I felt really threatened for the first time in my career. Fortunately I knew their tour manager and after an hour or so he persuaded them to work with me and we ended up getting a pretty good set of photographs.

I had already worked a lot with Kate when I was asked to produce the cover for her second album Lionheart in 1978. It won a prestigious sleeve design award and I continued to work with Kate over the following months.

This is from my last shoot with Eurythmics.

I was asked to go to Paris to shoot a session that I thought was going to be the cover image for their new album. When I got there Dave told me that he was going to have a painting made from my portrait for the cover. I never really understood why as my photograph was so much better than the painting!
