The Autumn 1965 US tour that I did with the Stones was an exciting and exhausting experience as well as a very frustrating one. The frustration was because of the appalling lighting in most of the venues – no portable lighting rig in this primitive times! In fact it was frequently too dark to take photographs of my sort but most of the time I “pushed” my film as far as it would go and hoped for the best! This shot was taken at one of the gigs where the lighting was pretty good – but I have no idea where in the USA it was…….

I was still only 18 years old and to have my first Stones cover was a turning point in my career. I digitally re-created & colourised this version for my most recent book on the band. The original cover was in black & white and I don’t recall shooting it in colour at the time, so I thought it was a good opportunity to create something new!

Oasis, 1996, Primrose Hill, London

When Mojo Magazine asked me to shoot Oasis for their cover in 1996 the band were the talk of the town and already had quite a reputation. I thought they were a Stones/Beatles tribute band and they rather left me cold, but I was not prepared for the problems to come! When they arrived at the studio they were so aggressive that I felt really threatened for the first time in my career. Fortunately I knew their tour manager and after an hour or so he persuaded them to work with me and we ended up getting a pretty good set of photographs.

I had already worked a lot with Kate when I was asked to produce the cover for her second album Lionheart in 1978. This image was based on an idea of Kate’s and constructed in my Great Windmill Street studio. I art directed the sleeve and my assistant at the time, Richard Grey, designed it. It won a prestigious sleeve design award and I continued to work with Kate over the following months.

In 1982 I had my first exhibition at The Photographers Gallery in London. It was the first ever exhibition to focus on music photography and I wanted to feature a new band as my final image. I was lucky enough to get Duran Duran to pose for me and this portrait is one of my favourites from that session.

I was asked to go to Paris to shoot a session that I thought was going to be the cover image for their new album. When I got there Dave told me that he was going to have a painting made from my portrait for the cover. I never really understood why as my photograph was so much better than the painting!
